Promotion and acquisition of qualifications
What should a statement contain? How do I write a professional development plan? How do I contact the Careers Board?
As part of internal continuing professional development, permanently employed senior and adjunct lecturers have the opportunity to seek promotion to professor and/or as a senior lecturer. Applications for promotion shall be assessed based on a strategic appraisal of the employee’s documented contribution to the development of the organisation and their suitability for promotion. At LTH, it is the Careers Board that deals with matters related to promotion and the acquisition of qualifications.
When applying for promotion, the head of department needs to attach a statement endorsing the application.
What should a statement contain?
- Strategic appraisal by the faculty board or head of department; for example, an account of funding, gender equality, needs, age structure and the research´s relation to bachelor education.
- An assessment of whether the employee has submitted documented contribution to the organisation’s development.
- An assessment of the employee’s personal suitability and suitability for promotion.
- Subject for the employment in both Swedish and English.
- Proposal for at least two external experts, ideally one man and one woman but at least one non-Swede.
What are the consequences of failing to supply sufficient documentation?
- An associate senior lecturer will only be considered for promotion on one occasion. An application must be submitted to LTH no later than six months prior to the expiry of the employment contract.
- An applicant who has been refused promotion to professor is permitted to submit a new application no earlier than two years after the previous application was submitted.
- An applicant who has been refused an appointment as an associate professorship is permitted to submit a new application no earlier than one year after the previous application was submitted.
How should I prepare a professional development plan for an associate senior lecturer?
- An individual systematic professional development plan shall be prepared in conjunction with the employment of an associate senior lecturer.
- This plan should be a multi-year plan that runs over the number of years the employment relates to, and it should be followed up twice a year. The professional development plan shall be revised at least once a year in conjunction with the employee’s performance appraisal.
- The requirements for promotion stated in the requirement profile prepared when the position was announced shall be stated in the professional development plan, along with the professional development measures that are to be implemented during the period of employment to ensure that these requirements can be met.
- The manager and employee are jointly responsible for planning professional development.
